Commitment to Student Learning
I believe that it is the teacher’s responsibility for student learning. Sure, students contribute to learning, but it is the teacher that instructs, provides, and encourages for that learning to take place. I believe that all students can learn. Not only can they learn, but in my classroom, they will learn. It is my obligation to understand my learners.
We see with minds as well as our eyes. We paint a picture and each concept or label is associated with a set of mental images and attributes. By doing this with each student, we can paint a picture of who they are and how they learn. It can provide a road map of how to reach that student and establish the route for learning. It is up to me, as a teacher, to discover the learning styles of each of my students and furnish them with the opportunities to do so.
I will allow my students to be creative explorers. I will motivate, encourage, and foster the learning process. I want to provide my students with a variety of teaching strategies, tools, and activities that will cultivate their learning. I will incorporate 21st Century Learning Tools, administer meaningful instruction, and provide diverse assessment. I will apply learning activities to include kinesthetic, visual, and auditory learners. I am committed to using educational theories in my classroom. I will incorporate Bloom’s Taxonomy into my lesson plans to stimulate different levels of thinking. It is my desire to open doors for all students to allow for learning.
The lesson plan I used is How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World. This is based off of the book and focuses on story comprehension and sequencing. I did a picture walk and read aloud with students. Students put the story back together using story tiles I made and matching the country, ingredient, and mode of transportation together. They also created their own passport using tickets for the countries in the book and illustrating the ingredient and mode of transportation for each.
