Commitment to Diversity
Are there two people in the world exactly alike? Do they have the same physical appearance, personality, or internal make-up? If you stop and think, there are no two people in the entire world that are exactly alike. We are our own individuals with unique traits that only we exhibit. Diversity is variety. It is being different from someone else. As a teacher, I must be aware of how diversity can affect a student’s learning and embrace the differences among my students.
I recognize that society is changing. Changing family composition, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, religion, and the varied abilities of children are all aspects of diversity that can fill a classroom. I am aware that what I say, perceive, believe, and think can support or impair student learning. I am committed to being the change agent to promote equity for all students. I will provide a safe haven for students where they are respected and accepted by others no matter their differences. I will create an environment that is inclusive of all students.
The lesson I chose is about exploring your five senses. In this lesson, students learn about their five senses through activities at different stations set up throughout the classroom. It incorporates activities that addresses different learning styles and abilities.
